BENQ confirms 144Hz FreeSync!

More good news keep coming on the flood of CES 2015 announcements.

Another 144Hz FreeSync monitor has now been announced, as the BENQ 2730Z. AMD said on twitter that this is an IPS panel, but this is not yet confirmed by BENQ. Being a 1ms spec, this may be TN. This monitor includes BENQ Blur Reduction 2.0!

What’s the deal with the VESA Adaptive-sync/FreeSync branding exactly?
AFAIK FreeSync is an AMD brand name, not VESA, so isn’t using it for the monitors just likely to keep Nvidia from ever supporting Adaptive-sync?

I think Adaptive-sync and FreeSync are different names of the same tech.

Much like FireWire (Apple trademark) versus IEEE 1394 (generic).

I thought FreeSync was specifically the logic layer on top of the adaptive syncing protocol that allows it to be used for whatever purposes.

If I understand correctly, VESA Adaptive-sync is literally just an EDID-style DisplayID table sent to a GPU at the DisplayPort handshake and the guaranteed ability of a monitor to properly accept any frames given within the promised frequency range, which is what makes it dirt cheap for scaler and thus monitor manufacturers to implement.

I actually looked this up just now on AMD’s site, and they claim:
FreeSync is our name for the complete solution: a Freesync-compatible AMD Radeon™ graphics card, a Freesync-enabled AMD Catalyst™ graphics driver and a DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync-compatible display. These three pieces will work together to abolish tearing, eliminate stuttering and greatly reduce input latency, making life better for gamers, and – really – for anyone who appreciates a seamless viewing experience.

I wonder whether they’re changing the meaning of the branding due to marketing team ambitions, etc.

So essentially the monitors are adaptive sync compatible, meaning that freesync is the internal name for adaptive sync within the AMD ecosystem, as Chief said.
