Native GtG performance of this fast IPS panel (BOE) is solid for the 2021 era. It’s a bit quicker than panels from around 2019 (like the VG259QM), bringing it closer to the performance of classic fast TN panels. The overdrive implementation is fairly standard. A basic, cheap approach we see on most monitors. It offers only a few fixed overdrive levels, which aren’t enough to cover the full refresh rate range effectively. Out of the three available, only two are actually usable. As a result, GtG at 240 Hz is not fully optimized, leaving the XG2431 slightly behind some competitors with similar specs. However, depending on your setup, that doesn’t necessarily have to be a deal breaker. Your mileage may vary.
Suggestions
ViewSonic and other manufacturers should finally consider making changes to overdrive tuning. We need:
- variable and automatic overdrive for both VRR and fixed refresh rate operations, with correctly tuned range and smooth gain transitions;
- large-number of overdrive levels for fine tuning, e.g. 100 levels for temperature compensation or fixing manufacturer flaws, a simple gain offset (multiplier on top of multiplier) to presumably well tuned range.
ViewSonic could have further improved the experience simply by agreeing with Blur Busters to leave the utility’ gain slider unlocked during PureXP OFF mode.
