BENQ XL2720Z artifact with BENQ Blur Reduction. (EDIT: Fix now available)

If you received an early BENQ XL2720Z unit with V1 firmware, there is a behavior in BENQ Blur Reduction where the strobe backlight flashes too early in the LCD scan-out.
UPDATE: This was done to decrease input lag by ~1-2ms with worse image quality. Fortunately, this becomes a user choice in V2 firmware with the Blur Busters Strobe Utility.

1. Enable BENQ Blur Reduction
2. Go to www.testufo.com/blurtrail in a supported stutter-free web browser.
3. Select Height -> Full Screen
4. If you see the image below, you have the strobe artifact.

This will cause double-image effects in the bottom 1/3 of the screen during panning/strafing/turning motion (such as www.testufo.com/photo) . The good news is I have told BENQ about this, and BENQ is making this adjustable for subsequent shipments of XL2720Z (with a utility), and via a V2 firmware upgrade.

Another good test is the TestUFO Alien Invasion Test using Height -> Full Screen. Ideally, there should be minimum crosstalk/minimum ghosting for both top and bottom edges. However, the XL2720Z has a major double-image effect 2/3rds of the way down on the screen, when Blur Reduction is enabled. See new illustrated photograph (different one).

UPDATE: Version 2 firmware allows you to mostly eliminate this ghosting, and become better than LightBoost, when used in conjunction with the newly released Blur Busters Strobe Utility!

Good job catching this by the way. I was going to check out some quick reviews again (been checking this week on and off) on work break after picking this up during lunch, but I wasn’t expecting to see this. No biggy if it’s firmware fixable, but I wasn’t sure if “may be fixed by firmware” means it will be fixable, or it well … “may be (?)”.

Oh. This sucks, I just picked one up, but haven’t opened it yet. Anyone have a model this doesn’t effect, or any word if it’s them all… imagine it likely is.

Ah, to return or not to return. That is the question. Leaning towards returning especially if we haven’t heard if it can be fixed via firmware yet, and waiting some more… I’ve been waiting & watching for this monitor since before Black Friday when I first read about it.

It is an easy fix ? I’m currently affected by this double image effect.
